What a check-up is for, and why the timing matters

A dental examination is the appointment that stops you needing the expensive ones. The dentist goes over every tooth surface, charts what is already there, measures the health of your gums, and looks at the tongue, cheeks and soft tissues. It takes about twenty minutes and most of the time nothing needs doing.

The reason to come while nothing hurts is that both of the common problems are silent until late. Decay does not ache until it reaches the nerve. Gum disease does not hurt at all — it just quietly loosens the bone holding your teeth in. A cavity caught early is a filling. The same cavity found six months after it started to ache is often a root canal and a crown, at several times the cost.

Our process

What happens at a check-up here

You will not be sold anything on the day. You leave with findings and a written plan, and you decide.

1

We ask before we look

What has been bothering you, how long for, what medicines you take, and whether anything about the dentist makes you anxious. Nervous patients should say so — it changes how we work, not whether we treat you.

2

The examination

Every tooth surface, existing fillings and crowns, gum measurements, and a soft-tissue check of the tongue, cheeks and palate. That last part takes a minute and is the one people never think about.

3

X-rays, only where needed

Digital X-rays show what the eye cannot reach — between teeth, under old fillings, below the gum line. We take them when there is a reason to, not as a routine on every visit.

4

Findings and a written plan

We show you what we found, explain what it means in plain language, and put the options and costs in writing. Nothing is booked until you have had a chance to think about it.

How long it takes, and how often to come back

Twenty minutes for the examination, a little longer if X-rays are needed or if you have questions. Booked together with a scale and polish it runs to about forty-five minutes.

Six months suits most people. We will shorten that if your gums bleed, if you smoke, or if you have a history of decay, and we are happy to lengthen it if your mouth has been trouble-free for years. The interval should follow your mouth, not a default in a diary. If you have not been to a dentist in a long time, that is not a reason to stay away — it is the most common thing we see, and nobody is lectured about it.

Why us

Why patients choose us for routine care

A check-up is where the relationship starts, so we treat it as one.

No treatment you do not need

If a tooth can be watched rather than drilled, we watch it and tell you what to look for. Findings come with options and a written cost, not a booking slip.

Open until 10 PM, six days

Routine care is the first thing a working week pushes aside. Evening appointments to 10 PM, Monday to Saturday, are why our patients actually come back at six months.

The whole family, one trip

Three women dentists, and children welcome from their first tooth. Tell us how many are coming and we will block the time so nobody waits.

Questions we get asked about check-ups

How often do I actually need a check-up?

Every six months for most people. If your gums bleed, you smoke, or you have had a lot of fillings, we may ask to see you more often. If your mouth has been trouble-free for years, once a year can be enough — we will tell you which applies to you rather than booking you in by default.

Nothing hurts. Is there any point coming?

Yes, and that is exactly the point. Decay and gum disease are both painless until they are advanced. A cavity found at a check-up is a filling; the same cavity found when it starts to ache is often a root canal. Pain is a late warning, not an early one.

Do I need X-rays every time?

No. We take them when we need to see something the eye cannot reach — between the teeth, under an old filling, or below the gum. For most patients that is every couple of years, not every visit. Digital X-rays use a fraction of the dose of the old film type.

What happens if you find something?

We show you, explain what it is, and give you the options with the cost in writing before anything is booked. Nothing is treated on the day you find out unless you are in pain and want it dealt with.

Can I bring the whole family in one visit?

Usually yes, and it is the easiest way to do it. Tell us how many people and their ages when you message and we will block enough time. Children are welcome from their first tooth.
