What is a root canal, and when do you need one?

Inside every tooth is a soft core — the pulp — of nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or a leaking old filling lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes inflamed and then infected. A root canal removes that pulp, cleans and shapes the narrow canals inside the roots and seals them, so the tooth stays in your mouth instead of being pulled.

The usual signs are a throbbing ache that keeps you awake, pain lingering after something hot or cold, tenderness on biting, a darkening tooth, or a boil on the gum beside it. Some teeth give no warning and show only on an X-ray. Pain that suddenly stops is not recovery — it usually means the nerve has died and the infection is spreading toward the bone.

How we do a root canal at Dental Studio

Every root canal starts with a digital X-ray and an honest answer to one question: can this tooth be saved?

1

Examine and X-ray

A digital X-ray shows the root shape, canal length and the bone around the root tip. You see the image on screen, and the full cost, before anything begins.

2

Numb the tooth properly

Local anaesthetic goes in and we wait until the tooth is genuinely numb. A rubber dam then keeps it dry and isolated from the rest of the mouth.

3

Clean and shape the canals

Rotary nickel-titanium files clean and shape each canal, with irrigation between them. Rotary is faster and gentler than hand filing, which is why one visit usually suffices.

4

Seal and restore

The canals are filled and sealed and the cavity closed. Most back teeth then need a crown to stop the weakened tooth fracturing, which we discuss the same day.

How long it takes, and what recovery is like

A straightforward front tooth takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour. A molar with three or four canals runs longer — plan for about 90 minutes, and occasionally a second visit if the canals are unusually curved.

The tooth is numb throughout, so you feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Numbness fades over two to three hours; chew on the other side until it has. Most patients then have dull tenderness on biting for two to four days, which settles with ordinary painkillers. Call us if pain worsens after three days or the face swells.

Why patients choose us for root canals

Three things patients tell us decided it for them.

Usually one visit

Rotary endodontics lets us clean and seal most canals in a single appointment, rather than leaving you a fortnight with a temporary dressing.

The price is fixed first

You get the whole figure before treatment starts, including whether a crown will be needed. Nothing is added at the counter afterwards.

Open till 10 PM, six days a week

Toothache keeps no office hours. Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 10 PM, with a Friday prayer break from 12:30 to 3 PM.

Questions we get asked about root canals

Is a root canal painful?

It should not be. The tooth is fully numb before we start, and most patients say it felt like a long filling. The pain people remember is the toothache that brought them in.

Can it really be done in one visit?

Usually. A heavily infected tooth, a re-treatment or very curved canals may still need two appointments, and we tell you which straight after the X-ray.

Why do I need a crown afterwards?

A root-treated back tooth has lost its nerve and a good deal of structure, so it turns brittle. A crown holds it together and spreads the force of chewing. Front teeth can sometimes take a filling instead.

Would it not be cheaper to pull the tooth?

On the day, yes. But the gap then needs a bridge, denture or implant, and neighbouring teeth drift into it. Keeping a restorable tooth is usually better long term — and we say plainly when it is not restorable.

How long will the treated tooth last?

Properly sealed and restored, many years and often for life. What shortens it is delay in fitting the final restoration, a fracture, or new decay at the margin.
