What braces and clear aligners do, and when you need them

Braces move teeth with light, continuous pressure. The bone around each root remodels as the tooth shifts, which is why orthodontics is measured in months rather than appointments. Fixed braces use brackets bonded to the teeth and a wire adjusted as you go. Clear aligners are a series of removable trays, each slightly different from the last.

People come to us for crowding, gaps, teeth that stick out, a bite that does not meet properly, or one stubborn tooth that has always sat out of line. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, so crowding is a gum-health question and not only a cosmetic one. Adults are welcome — teeth move at any age, usually a little more slowly.

Our process

How orthodontic treatment works at Dental Studio

We start with an assessment rather than a price. Not every case suits aligners, and we would rather say so at the first visit.

1

Assessment and records

A digital X-ray, photographs and a bite check. We explain which appliance suits your case, roughly how long it should take and what the whole course costs.

2

Choosing the appliance

Metal brackets are the most robust and usually least expensive. Ceramic brackets are tooth-coloured and far less visible. Clear aligners are removable, which suits adults at work — but only if worn.

3

Fitting

Fitting fixed braces takes about an hour and is not painful, though teeth ache for a few days afterwards. Aligner patients get their first trays and are shown how to seat and clean them.

4

Monthly monitoring

You come in every four weeks or so, for the wire to be adjusted or the next trays issued, and for us to check the gums. Missed visits are the commonest reason treatment overruns.

How long it takes, and what to expect along the way

Most cases run between 12 and 24 months. Mild crowding can finish sooner; complex bite corrections take longer. Aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day — if they spend the day in a pocket, treatment simply stops.

Teeth ache for two to four days after fitting and after each adjustment; painkillers and soft food get you through it. Brackets can rub the cheek in the first week, which orthodontic wax settles. Avoid hard and sticky food, because a broken bracket costs an extra visit. Cleaning takes longer with fixed braces, and skipping it leaves white marks.

Why us

Why patients choose us for braces

Two years of treatment is a relationship, not a purchase.

All three appliances here

Metal, ceramic and clear aligners are all offered, so the recommendation follows your bite rather than what the clinic happens to stock.

Monthly visits, evening slots

Adjustments run to 10 PM, six days a week, so two years of treatment does not mean two years of leaving work early.

Instalment-friendly, in writing

The full course is quoted at the assessment and can be paid across the monthly visits. Ask for the schedule in writing and you will get it.

Questions we get asked about braces and aligners

Am I too old for braces?

No. Teeth move at any age as long as the gums and the bone holding them are healthy. Adult treatment is often a little slower, and any gum disease is treated before we start.

Do braces hurt?

Fitting them does not. Teeth ache for two to four days afterwards, and for a day or so after each adjustment, which ordinary painkillers handle. Brackets can rub the cheek in the first week.

Are clear aligners as good as fixed braces?

For mild to moderate crowding and spacing they work well and are far less visible. Severe rotations, large gaps and complex bite problems are handled more predictably with fixed braces. We tell you which group you are in.

Will I need teeth taken out?

Sometimes. If there is not enough room in the arch for the teeth to line up, the space has to come from somewhere. Plenty of cases need no extractions, and it is always discussed first.

What happens when the braces come off?

You are given a retainer, and you wear it. Teeth have a memory and drift back over the years without one — the commonest reason people need a second course of treatment.
