Dentist-supervised in-clinic whitening at Dental Studio by Dr Fatima in Satellite Town, opposite Gate 3 of Holy Family Hospital.
In-clinic whitening uses a peroxide gel applied to the enamel under supervision, with a barrier placed over the gums first. The gel breaks down stain molecules that have soaked into the tooth over years of tea, coffee, cola, paan and smoking. Nothing is painted or bonded on — the shade change happens inside the enamel itself.
It works best on the yellowish staining that comes from food, drink and age. It does less for the grey discolouration left by old tetracycline, and nothing at all to crowns, veneers, bridges or white fillings, which keep the shade they were made in. Whitening is not a substitute for a clean: if there is plaque, tartar or decay, we deal with that first.
Whitening here is always preceded by a check-up. Bleaching over decay or inflamed gums hurts and works poorly, so the examination is what makes the session comfortable.
We examine the teeth and gums, look for decay and exposed root surfaces, and record your starting shade against a guide so the change is measurable rather than a matter of opinion.
Surface stain and tartar are removed by scaling and polishing. On lightly stained teeth that alone makes a visible difference, and it lets the gel reach the enamel evenly.
A barrier is placed over the gums and the gel applied in timed cycles, with a dentist in the room throughout. The session itself takes about an hour.
We record the finishing shade beside the starting one, then go through the 48 hours that follow, when enamel picks up fresh stain most easily.
Allow about an hour in the chair for the session, plus a short check-up beforehand. You walk out with the result the same day — there is no healing period.
Sensitivity to cold is the usual after-effect. It tends to start within a few hours, is worst on the first evening and settles within a day or two; a desensitising toothpaste for the following week helps. Your gums may look pale where the barrier sat, which recovers quickly. For the first 48 hours enamel takes up stain easily, so avoid tea, coffee, cola, curry and smoking.
Book this treatmentWhitening is the treatment most often sold badly. Here is the difference supervision makes.
The gel is applied by a dentist with your gums protected, not handed to you to manage at home. That is the difference from a kit bought online.
We match your teeth to a shade guide before and after, so the result is something you can see rather than take our word for.
If the discolouration comes from a dead front tooth, an old filling or tetracycline, bleaching will not fix it — and you are told before you pay.
Used at dental concentrations, under supervision and on healthy teeth, whitening is not considered to damage enamel. The common side effect is temporary sensitivity, not erosion. The risk comes from unsupervised kits and repeat bleaching without a check-up.
Usually a year or two, but it depends on you. Tea, coffee, cola, paan and smoking bring the stain back faster; regular scaling and thorough brushing hold it longer.
No. Porcelain and composite keep the shade they were made in. If your natural teeth lighten and a front crown does not, it will stand out — which is why we point out existing restorations before you book.
For most people the change after one session is clearly visible. Teeth that start several shades down the guide may want a second. We assess the starting shade rather than selling a course up front.
We do not carry out elective whitening during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. There is no evidence of harm at these concentrations, but no good evidence of safety either, and it is easily postponed.
