What is a dental implant, and when do you need one?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed into the jawbone to take the place of a missing tooth root. Over the following months the bone grows tightly against it — osseointegration — and once it is stable an abutment and crown go on top. The finished tooth is brushed and chewed on like any other.

Implants are considered when a tooth has been lost or must be removed, when a bridge would mean cutting down healthy neighbouring teeth, or when a denture moves and is uncomfortable. They need enough bone to hold them and healthy gums around them. Uncontrolled diabetes, active gum disease and smoking all reduce the chance of integration, so those are the first things we check.

Our process

How we place implants at Dental Studio

An implant is a planned course, not one appointment. The first consultation is free, and the Modern Diagnostic Centre lab shares our premises.

1

Free consultation and X-ray

We examine the site, take a digital X-ray and assess how much bone and gum there is to work with. You leave with a written plan, a timeline and the full cost.

2

Health checks before surgery

Pre-surgical bloods, including blood sugar, are run at the lab on the premises. Uncontrolled diabetes and active gum infection are treated before surgery, not discovered during it.

3

Placing the implant

The area is numbed, the site prepared and the implant placed — usually under an hour. Dr Linta Gulraiz, our resident maxillofacial surgeon, handles the surgical work.

4

Healing, then the crown

The implant integrates with the bone over three to six months. When it is stable we take an impression and fit the abutment and crown, checking the bite before cementing.

How long it takes, and what recovery is like

From consultation to finished crown, a single implant usually takes three to six months. Almost all of that is bone healing rather than chair time — surgery day itself is normally under an hour.

Expect swelling and soreness for two to three days, often worst on the second. Ice on the cheek, soft food, the painkillers we prescribe and no smoking make the biggest difference. We review you at about a week, and again when the implant is ready to restore. Ring us if swelling is still increasing after day three.

Why us

Why patients choose us for implants

An implant is a long commitment, so here is what is actually different about having one done here.

Lab tests on the premises

Modern Diagnostic Centre shares our building, so pre-surgical bloods are taken here rather than costing you a separate trip.

Free consultation, written plan

You see the X-ray, the timeline and the full cost — including the crown, which many implant quotes quietly leave out.

Surgery and crown in one clinic

Dr Linta Gulraiz, completing her FCPS in oral and maxillofacial surgery, places the implant; Dr Fatima restores it.

Questions we get asked about dental implants

Does getting an implant hurt?

The surgery is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure rather than pain. Most patients compare the days afterwards to having a tooth out — sore for two or three days and manageable with ordinary painkillers.

How long does an implant last?

A well-placed implant in healthy bone can last for decades, and titanium cannot decay. The crown on top wears and may eventually need replacing. What puts an implant at risk is gum disease around it, smoking and uncontrolled diabetes.

Am I too old for an implant?

Age alone is rarely the barrier — bone quality, gum health and your general medical condition are what matter. Implants are not placed in teenagers whose jaws are still growing.

What if I do not have enough bone?

Bone can often be built up with a graft, before the implant or at the same appointment. It adds months to the timeline and cost to the quote, and we tell you at the consultation.

Would a bridge not be simpler?

A bridge is quicker and cheaper up front, but usually means trimming the healthy teeth either side of the gap. An implant leaves them untouched. Which is right depends on the gap and your budget.
