What is digital smile design, and when does it help?

Digital smile design is a planning process rather than a treatment. We photograph your face and smile, scan your teeth, and design the proposed shape, length and position on screen. You see the result beside your current smile and change it before anyone picks up an instrument.

It earns its place whenever several front teeth are being changed at once — veneers, crowns, whitening and alignment combined, or a rebuild after years of wear. It matters much less for a single back tooth. The approved design then becomes the instruction the laboratory works to, which is how the finished teeth end up resembling what you agreed to rather than an approximation of it.

How digital smile design works at Dental Studio

The design visit is separate from treatment, so you can take the plan away and think about it.

1

Photographs and video

A set of standard photographs and a short video of you talking and smiling. Teeth have to work in a moving face, not only in a still one.

2

Intraoral scan

A small scanner passes over your teeth and builds a 3D model. No impression tray, no gagging, and the file goes straight to the laboratory.

3

Design on screen

Midline, proportion, tooth length and the line your smile follows are set against your lip and face, then shown to you side by side.

4

Approve, then treat

Nothing is prepared until you have seen it and said yes. The approved design then guides the temporaries and the final work.

How long it takes, and what recovery is like

There is nothing to recover from. The photographs, scan and consultation take about an hour, and the design is ready at a second short visit a few days later. Nothing is drilled, nothing is numbed, and you can eat straight afterwards.

What takes time is the decision. Most people want to sit with the images for a week, show them to someone and come back with changes — which is exactly the point of designing before treating. How long the treatment itself then takes depends on what you choose: composite veneers can be done in a visit, porcelain work usually takes two, and anything involving alignment is measured in months.

Why us

Why patients choose us for smile design

You approve the smile, not a description of it

Seeing your own face with the proposed teeth is a different thing from being told we will shorten the canines.

The scan goes straight to the lab

A 3D file removes the guesswork of an impression, so the technician works from your teeth rather than from a mould of them.

No obligation to treat

The design is a separate appointment. Take it away, think about it, and come back if you want to.

Questions we get asked about digital smile design

Is digital smile design a treatment?

No, it is the planning stage. It shows you what veneers, crowns or whitening would look like on your own face, so you can decide before anything is prepared.

How accurate is the preview?

It is a close guide rather than a photograph of the future. Gum shape, existing tooth position and what the laboratory can physically build all affect the result, and we point out those limits while designing.

Does the scan hurt or make me gag?

No. A small camera passes over the teeth. Most people find it easier than a conventional impression tray, which is the usual cause of gagging.

Can I change the design?

That is what it is for. Longer, shorter, whiter, squarer — say so and we redraw it. Changes on screen cost nothing; changes after bonding cost a great deal.
