What are dentures, and which type do you need?

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and the gum around them. A full denture replaces a whole arch once no teeth remain. A partial denture fills several gaps and clips onto the teeth that are left. A flexible denture uses a soft nylon base instead of rigid acrylic or metal, which is lighter in the mouth and shows no metal clasps.

Most people come to us after years of managing without back teeth, when chewing has become one-sided and the lip has started to fall in a little. Dentures restore chewing and support the cheek. They are not the only answer — implants hold teeth without covering the palate — but they remain the quickest and least invasive way to fill several gaps at once.

Our process

How we make a denture at Dental Studio

A denture is built over several short visits. Rushing any of them is what produces one that never quite fits.

1

Assessment and impressions

We check the ridge, the remaining teeth and the way your jaws meet, then take impressions. Any tooth that has to come out first is planned at this stage.

2

Bite registration

A wax rim sets the height of your bite and where the teeth should sit, so the finished denture supports the lip without looking too full.

3

Try-in

You see the teeth set in wax and try them in your mouth. Shape, shade and position can all still change here, so this is the visit to be fussy.

4

Fit and adjust

The finished denture is fitted and the pressure points relieved. Expect one or two short adjustment visits in the first fortnight; they are part of the job.

How long it takes, and what recovery is like

Plan on three or four appointments over two to three weeks, each under half an hour. If teeth have to come out first we usually wait several weeks for the gum to settle, because a healing ridge keeps changing shape.

The first fortnight with a new denture is the hard part: it feels large, speech is odd, and sore spots appear where the base presses. All of that is normal and all of it is fixable — come in and let us relieve the spot rather than filing it yourself. Start with soft food cut small, chew on both sides at once, and practise reading aloud. Take it out at night and keep it in water.

Why us

Why patients choose us for dentures

We keep adjusting until it fits

Follow-up adjustments in the first weeks are expected, not an imposition. A sore spot is usually a five-minute fix.

Acrylic, flexible and metal framework

We fit all three and explain which suits your ridge and your remaining teeth, rather than the one that is quickest to make.

A try-in you can veto

You see the teeth set in wax before the denture is finished, so the shade and the shape can still be changed.

Questions we get asked about dentures

How long before I can eat normally?

Give it two to three weeks. Start with soft food cut small and chew on both sides at once. Tough meat and crusty bread are the last things to come back.

Will people be able to tell?

A well-set denture is hard to spot. Tell us at the try-in if the teeth look too even or too white — changing that is exactly what the try-in visit is for.

Do I sleep in them?

No. Leave them out overnight so the gum can recover, and keep them in water so the base does not dry out and warp.

Will a denture stop my face sinking in?

It supports the lip and cheek, which usually helps. It does not stop the bone under the gum shrinking over the years, which is why dentures need relining or remaking in time.

Do new dentures hurt?

Making them does not hurt: impressions and the try-in involve no injections or drilling. A new denture usually rubs in one or two places during the first week. That soreness is normal and is fixed by easing the fitting surface at a quick review visit — please do not file it yourself.

How do I look after my dentures?

Brush them every day with a soft brush and plain soap or denture cleaner, not toothpaste, which scratches the acrylic. Clean them over a basin of water so they do not break if dropped, keep them in water overnight, never use hot water, and come in once a year so we can check the fit and your gums.
